Remember that instant attraction is not a necessity.

Instant attraction is a myth perpetuated by love stories, and while for some couples, it is love and attraction at first sight, for the majority, it is something that builds up over time as you get to know someone. Of course, it is always great if there is a spark or some connection with one another, but if there isn’t one, give it time. It may not be there at all, but sometimes, it is there but takes a little while to be apparent.

Check how compatible you are

While opposites certainly can and do attract, there has to be a degree of compatibility between you and a potential life partner. For example, if they have children and you can’t think of anything worse (or vice versa!), then you probably are not going to be compatible. If they like to be out partying every Friday and Saturday and you would instead rather be tucked up in bed with a hot chocolate and Netflix, it is worth thinking about whether you are compatible. Some people like to look at their star signs for compatibility – for example, did you know that the least compatible signs with Sagittarius are generally considered to be Virgo and Pisces? If star signs are something you believe in, you might want to check them out first.

Keep things in perspective.

Making the search for a relationship your sole focus in life is unhealthy, and will most likely slow down the process. If you are out there, enjoying life and having fun, you are much more likely to find your soul mate. Keeping your life balanced and fulfilled makes you a much happier and much more interesting person when you do meet someone special. It is also important to remember that it is likely you will meet lots of frogs before you meet your prince or princess – don’t get disheartened if you don’t find love straight away – very few people do.

Keep an eye out for red flags.

Red-flag behaviours can indicate that a relationship is not going to lead to healthy, lasting love. Trust your instincts and pay close attention to how the other person makes you feel. If you tend to feel insecure, ashamed, or undervalued, it may be time to reconsider the relationship sooner rather than later. These include:

the relationship being alcohol dependent – when the relationship only flourishes when one or both of you are under the influence of alcohol and controlling behaviour – if your new love interest tries to stop you having your own thoughts and interests, it might be time to call it a day.
